Colorado is on track this month to set a record for the most car accident fatalities in a single year for the second consecutive year, according to recent news reports about the continued increase in car accident deaths, including reports by KKTV 11 News in Colorado Springs.

Meanwhile, Colorado Springs has already set a single-year record this year for motor vehicle accident fatalities with 52 car accident deaths so far, according to KRDO 13 News in Colorado Springs. The previous record was 51 motor vehicle accident fatalities in 2020.

Colorado car accident deaths soar higher.

For the second year in a row, car accident fatalities in Colorado are on track to set a record for the most motor vehicle deaths in the state since 2002, when 743 people died in car accidents statewide, according to KKTV 11 News.

Last year, 672 people died in motor vehicle accidents in Colorado. As for this year, KKTV 11 News reported in mid-November that 623 people had already died in car accidents statewide and that there were 62 motor vehicle fatalities each month in Colorado.

Around the same time in November, KRDO 13 News reported the record-setting 52nd car accident fatality in Colorado Springs, which involved a pedestrian being fatally struck while crossing the street on South Academy Boulevard.

Why are Colorado car accident fatalities higher?

There are many reasons why car accident deaths continue to increase in Colorado Springs and throughout Colorado. In general, such increases are driven by reckless or negligent drivers. Specific reasons why include the following:

  • Speeding drivers who can't slow down in time to avoid a collision.
  • Distracted drivers who aren't paying attention and cause serious or fatal car accidents.
  • Aggressive or reckless drivers who break the rules of the road, including running a red light, not yielding for pedestrians in a crosswalk, or making an illegal turn at an intersection.
  • Drunk drivers or drivers under the influence of drugs.
